Project Mustafa - Evolution of 3D Printed Prosthesis in Pakistan

Imagine having a dream; you step on the short soft green grass and hear loud cheers from the whole ground. You look left, then right, and see a sea of people cheering and chanting your name. You walk past AB De Villiers, Hashim Amla and find yourself soon on a flat rough surface, the pitch. The bowler gives you a sharp look and shrugs. You know this is the time to hold the bat and score a six with so much strength that the ball breaks the glass of the bowler’s room. You look down to hold the bat with both your hands tightly but just cannot. You feel something is missing, it’s not the strength but a hand.

Such is the case of Mustafa, a boy who once had wished to play with his friends outside his home. Due to his disability, his wishes could not be turned into reality. He has had several dreams but who would give a chance to a disabled boy who can’t hold a bat properly. The performance of his routine tasks got hampered. A prolonged disability could have sent him into depression and anxiety.

Bionik understood the pain and the sufferings of Mustafa and planned of providing him with a prosthesis. The whole procedure took around a month in which the arm was measured, the prosthesis was designed and parts were 3D printed. The 3D printed parts were then assembled to form a prosthetic arm and hence implanted in Mustafa’s arm. Bioniks has opened new horizons for Mustafa who may now not only play his favorite sport but also try his hand at the impossible.

There are many variations and degrees of impairment within each of the different types. Each of these, disabilities, have their own barriers. These impairments need to be treated but the people in Pakistan are unaware of the technological advancements that can provide a way. Around 3 million people in Pakistan face different types of disabilities, among which 2.5 million are treatable.

In our society, people may sympathize with the person but do not empathize. Bioniks comes down breaking the tradition. Bioniks encounters all the cases of disabilities, it understands that each of these needs to be addressed in different ways. Countless children every day fail to realize their potential due to their disabilities but Bioniks is at a dream rescue mission and has not turned down even one child that has reached them.
